Standard EN 388 applies to mechanical risks, defining performance for abrasion, cutting, tearing, perforation, and impact resistance.

Levels of performance under EN 388 are rated for abrasion (1–4), cut resistance (A–F / 1–5), tear resistance (1–4), and puncture resistance (1–4).

The Coupe-test measures cut resistance using a rotating blade; TDM test uses a straight blade under defined force.
